If you’ve just got a new puppy, then welcome to the wild, unpredictable, often exhausting but always rewarding world of puppyhood. I’ve been there myself (and with plenty of clients), so here are ten things I think you really should know to make your life easier, your pup’s journey smoother, and maybe save you a little sanity along the way.
1. Puppies need a LOT of mental stimulation, not just walks.
Their tiny brains are like little sponges…
Games, new smells, and simple challenges are just as important as physical exercise. Yes, that sniffing marathon counts as work.
2. Socialisation is crucial but it needs to be done right.
Don’t feel pressured to introduce your pup to every dog and person you meet. Slow, positive experiences beat chaotic interactions any day.
3. Consistency matters.
If you and everyone in your household aren’t on the same page, your puppy will exploit the confusion. Set clear rules and stick to them, before the puppy writes their own rulebook.
4. It’s okay to ask for help early.
Don’t wait until you’re halfway down the rabbit hole of conflicting advice and endless Google searches. Reach out to experts early, it’ll save you a lot of guesswork.
5. Puppies testing boundaries is totally normal.
If they weren’t trying to push every button you have, they wouldn’t be puppies. They’re figuring out the world and their place in it. Staying calm and consistent works way better than losing your temper.
6. Chewing is a phase — but they still need proper outlets.
Yes, expect some things to get gnawed on. Stock up on appropriate toys so your furniture doesn’t suffer.
7. Puppies sleep a lot… more than you think.
If your pup’s grumpy or acting out, chances are they need a nap. Sleep helps them grow and absorb all that new information. Plus, it gives you some quiet time.
8. Keep training sessions short and fun.
Puppies don’t have long attention spans. Keeping sessions brief helps them stay focused and prevents frustration for both of you.
9. Your mood affects your puppy.
If you’re stressed, your pup will notice and mirror that. Take a breath, stay calm, and remind yourself you’re doing okay.
10. Mistakes happen. You’re learning together.
There’s no perfect puppy owner. Just someone figuring it out as they go. Celebrate the progress and small wins, even if it’s just surviving the first week.
Puppies will test you, exhaust you, and surprise you, often all at once. Take it one day at a time, try not to lose your cool, and know that you’re not the only one figuring it out as you go. If you ever need to ask a question, vent, or just feel slightly less alone in the chaos, I’m a message away.
